Middelburg is a town and municipality on the (former) island of Walcheren, Province of Zeeland, the Netherlands . It is the capital of Zeeland. About 48,000 people were living in the municipality in 2017. About 40,000 people were living in the town in 2011. Middelburg received city rights in 1217.
