9 ott 2003 · Count Basie's Kansas City Seven added Buck Clayton for a September 1939 session that produced, among other things, "Lester Leaps In." Count Basie and his All-Star Rhythm Section added tenor player Don Byas recording a series of blues that included Leroy Carr's "How Long Blues" and "St. Louis Blues." Basie is beginning to define his swing style.

Gary Giddins expands on the importance of tempo in the performance of 'Lil' Darlin,' saying that "in the enduring 'Li ' l Darlin', [Hefti] tested the band's temporal mastery with a slow and simple theme that dies if it isn't played at exactly the right tempo.
4 set 2020 · Due to financial restrictions, Basie was forced to disband his orchestra in 1950. For the next two years, Basie worked with smaller bands featuring six to nine musicians. Basie recreated his orchestra in 1952 and began touring the US, followed by Europe and Japan. Basie’s new band was known as the “New Testament Band.”
