13 apr 2024 · Friedrich of Saxe-Altenburg (12 February 1599, Torgau – in battle: 24 October 1625, Seelze) was a member of the Ernestine branch of the House of Wettin and a Duke of Saxe-Altenburg and Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg. Friedrich is sometimes called "Friedrich the younger" to distinguish him from
Anna Maria of the Palatinate-Neuburg. Religion. Lutheran. Johann Philipp (25 January 1597 – 1 April 1639), was a duke of Saxe-Altenburg . He was born in Torgau, the eldest (but fourth in order of birth) surviving son of Friedrich Wilhelm I, Duke of Saxe-Weimar and Anna Maria of the Palatinate-Neuburg, his second wife.

Family. He was the fourth but second surviving son of Frederick, Duke of Saxe-Hildburghausen (of Saxe-Altenburg from 1826) and Duchess Charlotte Georgine of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. He fought in the Austrian ranks against Napoleonic France in the 1813–1814 war. Georg succeeded his brother Joseph as Duke of Saxe-Altenburg when he abdicated, in 1848.
Life. The death of his older brother Christian (1663) made him the new heir of the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg. When his father died in 1669, Friedrich Wilhelm III succeeded him; but, because he was only twelve years old, his maternal uncles, Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony and Duke Maurice of Saxe-Zeitz, assumed the guardianship of the new duke and the regency of the duchy.
