Burton Baskin was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1913; his future brother–in–law, Irvine "Irv" Robbins, was born in Tacoma, Washington, four years later, in 1917. Their success story started during the depression years. As a teenager in the 1930s, Robbins managed a small ice cream parlor in his father's dairy store in Tacoma.
