François Leterrier est né en 1929 à Margny-lès-Compiègne dans l'Oise. Il est le père du réalisateur Louis Leterrier. Après avoir débuté ses études à Compiègne, François Leterrier obtient une licence de philosophie à la Sorbonne, à Paris. Attiré par le milieu du cinéma, il fréquente un ciné-club universitaire.
