The College traces its origins to the year 1909 when the then Silliman Institute offered its first classical two-year A.B. course. In 1921, the College obtained recognition for its offering of a four-year A.B. degree. At about the same time, a science course was also offered, a B.S. degree major in Chemistry.
Handsome Dan XIX, also known as Kingman, is our newest Yale mascot. Kingman is named after the late Yale president Kingman Brewster. He loves meeting new people, playing with his best friend Heidi, and eating peanut butter. Kingman would love if you joined him during playtime in the Silliman courtyard. Silliman College is a residential college at Yale University. It opened in September 1940 as the last of the original ten residential colleges, and includes buildings that were constructed as early as 1901. It is the largest college in terms of area, consisting of a full city block in New Haven, bordered by College, Wall, Grove and Temple Streets.

One hundred and eighty students transferred to a different residential college this semester, with Silliman College seeing the highest ratio of transfer applications from outside students to requests from affiliated students to leave the college, according to data from the Yale College Dean’s Office.
