Alfred Wolfsohn est né à Berlin le 23 septembre 1896 dans une famille juive allemande de la classe moyenne. Ses parents n‘étaient pas des juifs orthodoxes pratiquants, mais AW fréquentait la synagogue avec son père à l’occasion des fêtes juives. L’un des cousins de son père était rabbin.
