The first school was founded in 1820 by a handful of Congregationalists. Silcoates Hall was bought from the Lumb family and The Yorkshire Dissenters’ Grammar School opened its doors. 1842. At Silcoates Hall, now leased to the School, the Headmaster and one assistant taught the boys in a schoolroom above the coachman’s house.
Silcoates is a happy school in a beautiful setting, where children and adults work together to be the best that they can be. Our aim is to inspire individuals who, by the time they leave Silcoates; are happy, confident and articulate young men and women; effective and independent learners; possess the resilience, knowledge and skills to succeed and thrive during the next stage of their lives.

Silcoates School is particularly delighted that 100% of all subject grades earned by students in Physics, Music and Further Maths were awarded at grades A* to A. In addition, more than half of all subject grades in Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Maths and Photography were awarded at grades A* to B, a testament to the well-rounded education that the school provides.
