It is the first time that the most successful country in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest has opted for an internal selection. Nicky Byrne was born in 1978 in the northside Dublin suburb of Baldoyle.

Byrne co-wrote the track with Wayne Hector and Ronan Hardiman. “Sunlight” is a mid-tempo effort and marks a slight shift in direction from the big ballads Nicky would have sung during his boyband days.
