La regia del progetto venne quindi affidata a Yoshifumi Kondō, esperto animatore, all’epoca quarantacinquenne, che aveva già contribuito alla realizzazione di numerose opere dello Studio[5]. Il film rappresenta però il primo e unico lungometraggio di Kondō come regista, dato che morirà nel 1998 poco prima di compiere i 48 anni di età, per un aneurisma all’aorta[6].
