Though David Hartford is credited as the director of Back to God's Country, the real talent behind the film was Nell Shipman, a remarkably accomplished woman who often directed, starred in, produced and also scripted her films. Born in Canada, Shipman arrived in Hollywood at the tender age of 14.

She is hugging and playing with bears, porcupines and whatnot; her touch magically converts a raging beast of a dog into a tame puppy.
