Rebel Rousers was shot in 1967 and released in 1970 to capitalise on the success of Easy Rider and the improved standing of some of the cast. Nicholson (in a supporting role himself) co-stars with Diane Ladd, Bruce Dern, and Harry Dean Stanton among others, and it’s another example of the foresight a number of these American indie filmmakers from the 60s films in terms of casting their movies.
Cohen, who recalled the film as the worst thing he ever made told Dern that he was friends with Cameron Mitchell whose name would be above the title as he was a big star. Cameron Mitchell remembered Jack Nicholson picking out a pair of striped pants and a stocking hat to in order to stand out in the film.
