Femme was my first real film. While researching the relationship between siblings, I came across a weblog in which boys talk about their sexual development and that this is sometimes projected onto their sister. I didn’t understand it initially, but as I read more about it, it seemed more and more logical.

But Freeman and Ping take a playful approach to gender and genre, twisting the tropes of film noir to explore the unpredictable, shifting power dynamic between its two leading men. In this sense, Jules is less the film’s femme than its femme fatale.
Jules’ (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) life and career as a drag queen is destroyed by a homophobic attack. But after a chance encounter with his attacker, the deeply closeted Preston (George Mackay), he is presented with the opportunity to exact revenge and in doing so discovers the lines of seduction, revenge and power are blurred.
