Sauli Niinistö was the National Coalition Party's candidate in the Finnish presidential election in 2006 and received 48.2 per cent of votes in the second-round runoff, when Tarja Halonen was elected to a second term. The following year Niinistö stood as a parliamentary candidate and was elected with a record number of votes.
