14 ott 2016 · Captain Lawrence Oates, suffering severely from frostbite, voluntarily left the camp one night and walked right into a blizzard, choosing to sacrifice himself rather than slow the other men down.
Lawrence, was his mother’s favourite, who she fondly called ‘baby boy’. Lawrence was a sickly child and was taken by his father to winter in South Africa. On the 16th March 1912, on the eve of his 32nd birthday Lawrence Oates would heroically surrender his life, and would have likely died on the 17th March. 2. His Uncle was an explorer too.

Oates, Lawrence Edward Grace (1880–1912) (1880–1912).Having entered the army in 1898, Oates saw service in the South African War. His interest in sailing, hunting, and kindred pursuits led him to apply for a post on Scott's 1910 expedition to the Antarctic. He was chosen as one of the party of five which reached the South Pole in January 1912.
