It stands on a hill in the neck of the meander of the River Severn on which the town originally developed. The castle, directly above Shrewsbury railway station, is a Grade I listed building.
Shrewsbury is famous as the birthplace of Charles Darwin, for its hundreds of historic buildings, and the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show held in mid-August. Shrewsbury is also well-known for its cycle-friendliness plus its many fine eateries ranging from sushi to vegan. By car the town is 50 minutes from Birmingham on the M6 and M54 motorways.
