Ezra Pound - Imagism, Modernism, Poetry: Unsettled by the slaughter of World War I and the spirit of hopelessness he felt was pervading England after its conclusion, Pound decided to move to Paris, publishing before he left two of his most important poetical works, “Homage to Sextus Propertius,” in the book Quia Pauper Amavi (1919), and Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920).

Ezra Pound addressed ‘A Pact’ to Walt Whitman. In the text, he suggests that it’s time for him to pick up and craft that which Whitman prepared. The poem is a direct rebuke of Whitman’s writing, one that the older poet never read. He died when Pound was only seven, but Pound’s dislike of his writing developed as he aged.
