I believe Fry's books are meant to be read more for fun than learning, which is perfectly fine, but if you're looking for a good scholarly overview of the Epic Cycle, I would instead suggest The Greek Epic Cycle by Malcolm Davies, the LOEB edition of the Epic Cycle Fragments, and The Greek Epic Cycle and its Ancient Reception: A Companion.
