Dramatis were a British synthpop band from the early 1980s. Chris Payne (vocals, keyboards), Rrussell Bell (guitars, keyboards), Cedric Sharpley (drums), Denis Haines (keyboards) were originally members of Gary Numan's backing band. Dramatis formed after Gary Numan quit touring, the backing band got together to form Dramatis.

Since Tubeway Army had increasingly become the sole vision of Numan, this moniker was abandoned, and Replicas was the last release to feature the name. Lidyard, who had pretty much been involved out of necessity, removed himself from the scene, and Gardiner continued for a while with Numan, also lending duties with his live band.

Dramatis had evidently decided to forge its own sound, yet for Numan fans (who were, after all, the primary audience), that decision must have been confusing at best. Speaking of confusion, the album was finally reissued in 2000 -- but as The Dramatis Project, under the moniker of Numan's first band, Tubeway Army.
