Augustus Pugin was de zoon van Augustus Charles Pugin, een Fransman die naar Engeland verhuisde tijdens de Franse Revolutie en trouwde met Catherine Welby uit Lincolnshire. Vanaf 1819 ging de familie Pugin op reis naar Frankrijk, waar Augustus in aanraking kwam met middeleeuwse architectuur. In 1831 trouwde Pugin met Anne Garnet.
Pugin, Augustus Welby Northmore (1812–52), architect, designer, and architectural theorist, was born 1 March 1812 in Keppel St., Russell Square, London, only child of Augustus Charles Pugin, an architectural draughtsperson who emigrated to England from France, and Catherine Pugin (née Welby), daughter of a distinguished English barrister.
Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin was an English architect, designer, artist and critic who is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. His work culminated in designing the interior of the Palace of Westminster in Westminster, London, England, and its iconic clock tower, later renamed the Elizabeth Tower, which houses the bell known as Big Ben.
This print was a collaboration between Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) whose expertise at capturing people in his images combined with the mastery of Auguste Charles Pugin (1762-1832) in illustrating architectural detail. Their resulting prints were published by Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) in The Microcosm of London.
