Tomothy si dedica professionalmente alla recitazione quando, dopo il divorzio dei genitori, si trasferisce nella California del sud con il padre, l'attore Jim Hutton.Il film con cui debutta sul grande schermo è "Gente comune" (1980), per il quale a soli 19 anni vince l'Oscar come migliore attore non protagonista.

Timothy Hutton Family. He was born in Malibu, California. Timothy’s father was actor Jim Hutton while his mother Maryline Adams (née Poole), was a teacher. Timothy’s parents divorced when he was three years old, and his mom took him and his older sister, Heidi (born in 1959), with her to Boston, and later to her hometown Harwinton, Connecticut.
