The Vigadó was built in 1859-1864 and replaced an older concert and amusement hall from 1833 that was destroyed by fire in 1848 during the Hungarian revolt against the Habsburg Empire. Vigadó is derived from the word vigádni which means having fun, being happy.

Pesti Vigadó ("Place for Merriment") is about 400m south of the Pest end of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Budapest's second largest concert hall is the home stage of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. The building (1859, architect Frigyes Feszl) is a mixture of Oriental and Hungarian Art Nouveau with romantic elements and pleasing adornments.
