1 mar 2024 · Blue Black Permanent was Margaret Tait’s first and only feature production. Although her abstract animations and densely allusive film poems such as Where I Am Is Here (1964) or On the Mountain (1974) earned Tait a small but devoted following among the English and Continental avant-garde, she was still something of an unknown in her native Scotland.
Wells acknowledged the impact of Tait on her work, particularly the film Blue Black Permanent which also centres around childhood memories of a now-absent parent, as experienced in the present. Tait's collection of 'Poems, Stories and Writings' is shown to be one of the books the character of Calum (played by Paul Mescal) has taken with him on his Turkish summer holiday with his young daughter.
2 ago 2020 · Tait was in her mid-seventies when she made the feature, which proved to be her penultimate film. I’m not sure why she decided at this late stage to attempt a full-length drama (though it’s still not long: 86 minutes) but the result didn’t leave me regretting she didn’t do more. Blue Black Permanent moves between Orkney and Edinburgh.
Tait even hoped to complete a sequel with Grigor, who had retained the sequel rights. Unfortunately, like Tait, Blue Black Permanent was the only feature film Grigor would complete. After Grigor’s untimely death in 1994, Tait expressed the desire to do a sequel in Grigor’s memory which would follow the narrative of the young boys grown-up.

With 1992’s Blue Black Permanent, she was the first Scottish woman to direct a feature film, yet her work was scarcely seen in Britain during her lifetime – even as she developed a small but dedicated following among the international artists’-film community.
