The Peterloo Massacre. On 16 August 1819, around 60,000 peaceful demonstrators gathered in St Peter’s Field, Manchester to hear pro-democracy speakers discuss the need for parliamentary reform. They were charged by armed cavalry. The ‘Peterloo Massacre’ quickly became infamous. Our records show both sides of the story.
Despite this, the ‘Peterloo massacre’ has been considered one of the most important radical events in British history. The reports of women and children wearing their Sunday best, brutally slashed by the sabres of a cavalry charge, shocked the nation and laid the foundations for the Great Reform Act of 1832.

The Peterloo Massacre. An estimated 18 people, including four women and a child, died from sabre cuts and trampling.
