Il film “Matthias & Maxime” è in linea con due precedenti successi di Xavier Dolan. Considerato l’enfant prodige del cinema canadese, a soli vent’anni Dolan si era fatto notare a Cannes nel 2009 dove aveva presentato il suo primo lungometraggio “J’ai tué ma mère”, di cui aveva scritto anche la sceneggiatura.
Matthias & Maxime è il suo ottavo film: segue di poco la regia del videoclip Hello di Adele e La mia vita con John F. Donovan, suo primo progetto in libro inglese. In Matthias & Maxime Dolan riveste anche i panni di Maxime, uno dei due personaggi principali.

Some thrilled to his exuberant unfettered youthfulness, others were put off by his visuals, deemed self-conscious and unconnected to the narrative. De opnames voor Matthias & Maxime gingen op 15 augustus 2018 van start en eindigden, na 48 draaidagen, op 15 november 2018. Er werd gefilmd in onder meer Montréal, Les Laurentides (een wijk in Quebec) en Laval. De film ging op 22 mei 2019 in première op het filmfestival van Cannes. Externe link
