Nick Lucas. Dominic Nicholas Anthony Lucanese (August 22, 1897 – July 28, 1982), known professionally as Nick Lucas, was an American jazz singer and guitarist. He was the first jazz guitarist to record as a soloist. His popularity during his lifetime came from his reputation as a singer.

In 1928 Gibson launched the Nick Lucas model (also known as the ´Special´) that would later undergo various changes. Initially, this instrument had the shape of the L-1, but with a deeper body that provided the signature sound, a characteristic that remained constant, as did the number of frets, the material, the type of bridge and even the shape of the body.
