Johan de Witt ( Dordrecht, 24 de septiembre de 1625- La Haya, 20 de agosto de 1672) fue una importante figura política neerlandesa. A mediados del siglo XVII controló las finanzas y la política de las Provincias Unidas, en colaboración estrecha con Cornelis de Graeff. 1 .
Johan de Witt besuchte die Beeckman-Schule in Dordrecht und studierte ab 1641 Jura an der Universität Leiden.Er reiste gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Cornelis im Jahr 1645 durch Europa, nach Frankreich, Italien, die Schweiz und England.
Op 20 augustus bezocht hij de Gevangenpoort waar zijn broer Cornelis op dat moment opgesloten zat. Toen dat nieuws zich onder het Haagse grauw verspreidde, werden de broers naar buiten gesleurd en op een gruwelijke manier om het leven gebracht. In zijn privéleven trad Johan op 16 februari 1655 in het huwelijk met Wendela Bicker (1635-1668).

In de ochtend van 20 augustus volgde zijn vonnis, nadat Tichelaar was vrijgesproken. Cornelis de Witt werd van al zijn ‘digniteiten vervallen verklaard’, met onmiddellijke ingang levenslang uit Holland en West-Friesland verbannen, alsmede veroordeeld tot betaling van alle gemaakte proceskosten.

In 1666 and 1667, he was mayor of Dordrecht, and several times deputy of his city in the States of Holland. Between 1663- 1665 and 1669-1671, De Witt was committed as the Council of the Zuiderkwaitier.
