Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Cosimo II de' Medici (12 May 1590 – 28 February 1621) was Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1609 until 1621. He was the elder son of Ferdinando I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Christine of Lorraine. He married Maria Magdalena of Austria and had eight children. Galileo Galilei was his childhood tutor.
Ferdinando II subentrò come Granduca di Toscana al padre Cosimo II (1590-1621) nel 1621, a soli undici anni. Il potere effettivo fu esercitato, fino alla maggiore età, da una reggenza di cui facevano parte la madre Maria Maddalena d'Austria (1589-1631) e la nonna Cristina di Lorena (1565-1636).
Ferdinando II de' Medici era figlio del granduca Cosimo II e di Maria Maddalena d'Austria. Suo padre morì quando Ferdinando aveva solamente 11 anni. Fino alla maggiore età del piccolo granduca, la Toscana fu affidata alla reggenza della madre e della nonna paterna, Cristina di Lorena , coadiuvate da un consiglio di reggenza [2] :
