Joseph Severn. London, 1793-1879, Rome. A scene from the Tempest, Prospero and Ariel. Oil on canvas, unlined. 76 x 64.1 cm.; 30 x 25 1/4 in. The present painting shows Ariel in the second scene of Shakespeare’s The Tempest reporting to Prospero on his success in carrying out his command to shipwreck the King of Naples and his crew in a violent Tempest.

Within three months the painter Joseph Severn, who had accompanied him from England the previous autumn and nursed him through his last illness, began a portrait of Keats reading in his old sitting-room at Wentworth Place (Figure 1), the house in Hampstead he had shared with Charles Brown from December 1818 to May 1820.

Joseph Severn was an English portrait and subject painter and a personal friend of the famous English poet John Keats. He exhibited portraits, Italian genre, literary and biblical subjects, and a selection of his paintings can today be found in some of the most important museums in London, including the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Britain.
