Biografie. Pullman verbrachte seine Kindheit in Rhodesien – dem heutigen Simbabwe –, Australien, London und Wales. Er studierte Anglistik am Exeter College in Oxford und war später Lehrer an einer Mittelschule, dann Literaturdozent am Westminster College in Oxford, wo er bis heute lebt. Er ist verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder.
Pullman compie sulle fiabe dei Grimm un'eccezionale operazione di riscrittura. Le sue versioni di Cenerentola, Cappuccetto rosso e di altre favole conservano il carattere onirico, magico e mitologico delle versioni più tradizionali, ma allo stesso tempo introducono elementi inediti che le rendono storie nuove, non solo interessanti «esercizi» di un filologo attento e sensibile.
