Carcano rifles were in official service for more than 100 years. The first Carcano, the Model 1891 (AKA M91 Carcano) was developed by Salvatore Carcano at the Torino Army Arsenal.
Nel 1866 l'Italia adottò il sistema Carcano che consentiva di utilizzare, adattandoli, gli esistenti fucili ad avancarica modello 1860. Furono così trasformati (al costo di 10 lire l'uno) 600.000 fucili che entrarono in servizio come modello Carcano 1868 e rimasero in dotazione fino all'adozione del Vetterli .

The name "Mannlicher-Carcano" annoys the Italians because the famous Austrian rifle designer Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher had nothing to do with the design of this rifle. "It was developed by the chief technician Salvatore Carcano at the Turin Army Arsenal in 1890 and called the Model 91 (M91)."
