It borders Mexico City to the east, and is part of the Greater Mexico City area. Region IX consists only of the city of Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, therefore regional statistics are the same as the city.

The hacienda reached its peak in the late 19th and early 20th century. After the Mexican Revolution, it was abandoned and it deteriorated. The hacienda was declared a national park by President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1937. Due to its style and condition, the hacienda has been used as a set for numerous Mexican and foreign films.
Leviatán (2021–) Estadio Neza 86 is a football stadium in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, a commuter town located east of Mexico City in the State of Mexico. The stadium is located on the grounds of the main campus of the Universidad Tecnológica de Nezahualcóyotl. The stadium will be renovated soon, which will decrease the capacity.
