Every year since our founding in 1833, Oberlin has helped to cultivate compassionate, rigorous, pragmatic visionaries—people who make an exceptional impact on the world. Our alumni include 23 members of the National Academy of Sciences, nine Pulitzer Prize winners, three Nobel Prize recipients, and countless award-winning artists.
The college and community thrived on progressive causes and social justice. Among Oberlin’s earliest graduates were women and black people. While Oberlin was coeducational from its founding in 1833, the college regularly admitted black students beginning in 1835, after trustee and abolitionist, the Rev. John Keep, cast the deciding vote to allow them entry.

Oberlin’s decision to create coed living and 24-hour visiting became famous by the November 20, 1970, issue of Life magazine. The article, “Co-ed Dorms: An Intimate Campus Revolution,” featured Oberlin students Rod Singler, a junior, and Cindy Stewart, a freshman. The two lived in the same dorm and developed a close personal relationship.
