De gebeurtenissen in Manchester by the Sea zijn van een welhaast ondraaglijke somberheid, maar dankzij de lome, onopgesmukte verteltrant verzandt de film niet in melodrama. Scenarist en regisseur Lonergan (You Can Count on Me, Margaret) portretteert zijn antihelden met veel mededogen, en Affleck maakt diepe indruk met zijn ingehouden hoofdrol.

Affleck offre l’interpretazione dell’anno nel suo ruolo. E’ devastante, trasparente e tiene il pubblico in attenzione costante.
