Spencer Dryden (born April 7, 1938, New York City, New York, USA – died January 11, 2005, Petaluma, California, USA) was an American musician best known as drummer for Jefferson Airplane and New Riders Of The Purple Sage. He also played with Dinosaurs, and the Ashes (19) (later known as The Peanut Butter Conspiracy). Nephew of Charlie Chaplin.

By 1970 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh, and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had joined as the group’s permanent drummer. Garcia remained in both The Dead and The New Riders until he found himself overcommitted, at which time Buddy Cage replaced him and the classic NRPS lineup was born.
At this point, Spencer Dryden traded in his drum sticks to begin managing the band. Patrick Shanahan, another Stone Canyon Band alumnus, fit right in on drums and is featured on Marin County Line, the late 1977 release that ended the bands association with MCA. Many more changes would engulf the New Riders personnel from this point on.
