6 lug 2014 · That has resulted in a long-standing reputation as a “homophobic” film for “Suddenly, Last Summer.” HOWEVER… Even taking into account a healthy amount of self-loathing on the part of Williams, it’s very difficult to imagine a genuinely homophobic story from someone partnered for more than 14 years with his personal secretary, the dashing Frank Merlo.
Suddenly Last Summer was originally a long one-act play that was first performed in 1958, along with Something Unspoken, on a double bill entitled Garden District. The 1959 film, directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz ( All About Eve ) was fleshed out to feature length by another gay writer, Gore Vidal.
