5 giorni fa · The Red House, Upton Lane, has been traced from the 18th century, but was reconstructed in a florid style in the 1870s. It is now St. Anthony's Catholic Club. Grove House, Upton Lane, was an 18th-century three-storey building. It was for long the preparatory department of St. Angela's convent school, but was demolished in 1950.

1 giorno fa · Ashburton senior school, Custom House, was opened in 1932 in the buildings previously used by the Russell Road higher elementary school. It was originally mixed, but by 1938 was restricted to boys. Much of it was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, after which the remaining buildings were combined with those of Russell Road elementary school to form a secondary modern school.

Founded in 1924, by such luminaries as Augustus John and Henry Lamb, Poole & East Dorset Art Society continues to thrive with almost 100 members - artists in all media and of all abilities. In 2019 PEDAS was made a charity.
