Il film "The Hours" ruota intorno a tre donne, ognuna presentata in un giorno cruciale della sua vita alle prese con delicate problematiche esistenziali. Una di esse è la scrittrice Virginia Woolf, che nel 1923 sta scrivendo il romanzo "Mrs. Dalloway", ma che soffre per l'isolamento impostole nella cittadina di campagna di Richmond, a causa delle sue precarie condizioni di salute.

The film begins with British writer Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) putting stones inside her pockets before drowning herself (in real life, she walked in to the River Ouse on 28th March 1941). Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) lives in 1951 in a wealthy Los Angeles suburb. Her husband, Dan Brown (John C. Reilly) is having a birthday.
