5 lug 2015 · The letter printed below was issued by Thomas count of Perche on behalf of his knights of the castlery of Bellême. It specifies four occasions for the feudal aid: the count's first knighting, his first ransom, the knighting of his eldest son and the marriage of his eldest daughter. It is also of great interest in its language.
The advance was known to Thomas, Count of Perche, but his knights were uncertain as to the enemy's strength. Two strategies were formed. Those who believed Marshal's force was relatively small in number favoured an offensive plan: a meeting in an open battlefield at the base of the hill, before Marshal could reach the city gates.
Thomas, Count of Perche's body was found in the aftermath stabbed through the eyes of his visor, when William Marshal the leader of the Royalist forces heard this he wept.
