    Ray Stiles started playing bass at the age of 14 on a guitar made by his dad. His musical influences were the beat groups of the early 60s; including The Hollies. He joined Mud in 1966 and turned professional in 1968. The band enjoyed fourteen top twenty hits, including three number one records, and performed all over the country.

  3. Ray Stiles Bass guitar and vocals. Born 20th November 1946. Ray was very much the brainy one of the band, leaving school with a satchel full of ‘O’ levels, going on to the North London Polytechnic to study to be an architect. But even while he was studying, Ray dreamed of becoming a musician. Ray continues to tour as a member of the Hollies.

The band has since been through numerous lineup changes, and currently includes lead guitarist and vocalist Tony Hicks, drummer Bobby Elliott (both since 1963), bassist and vocalist Ray Stiles (from 1986 to 1990, and since 1991), keyboardist Ian Parker (since 1991), lead vocalist and guitarist Peter Howarth, and guitarist and vocalist Steve Lauri (both since 2004).

These were instrumental groups such as The Shadows and The Aventures. No one song was responsible for my interest; I was learning to play just by copying what I heard on records.

Later that year their bass player (Nigel Lunt) left and was replaced by Ray Stiles. In 1967 Mud won a national contest “Search for Sound” which led to them signing to Pye Records.
