Lionel Sharples Penrose was born in London on 11 June 1898. His father James Doyle Penrose (1862-1932) who was a portrait painter and his mother Elizabeth Josephine (Peckover) Penrose were both members of the Society of Friends (Quakers), as their ancestors had been for more than 200 years. He was the second of four brothers.
