Graves earned a bachelor’s degree in 1958 from the College of Design at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a master’s degree in architecture (1959) at Harvard University.
Graves produced both high end and mass consumer product designs for several companies, including Alessi in Italy and Target and J. C. Penney in the United States. Graves wollte Gebäude ähnlich strukturieren wie den menschlichen Körper. Nach seiner Vorstellung sollten alle Gebäude Beine, Körper und Kopf besitzen. By the mid-2000s Michale Graves could have rested on his laurels and looked back at a career full of self-made achievements, but he wanted something more.
