When Catharine Beecher’s fiancé died at sea in 1822, she used the small inheritance he bequeathed to her to co-found the Hartford Female Seminary, an innovative school that offered young women the opportunity to study subjects that had traditionally been part of the male curriculum.

A female seminary is a private educational institution for women, popular especially in the United States in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when opportunities in educational institutions for women were scarce. The movement was a significant part of a remarkable transformation in American education in the period 1820–1850. [1]
This chapter discusses Catharine's opening of a school for girls, to become the Hartford Female Seminary. The chapter describes the teachings provided at the school and the conflicts Beecher dealt with as head of the school until her resignation in 1831.
