9 dic 2021 · The portraits initially were kept in the Duke of York’s chambers, but at some point were moved to a dressing room in Windsor Palace, which is how they came to be known as “The Windsor Beauties.”. The notorious Samuel Pepys commented on the portraits that they “were good, but not like.”. He considered them flattering to the sitters.

He married his second wife Margaret Brooke in 1665, she being then about 18. Very soon afterwards she became mistress to the Duke of York, and her very early death in 1667 gave rise to the (unfounded) suspicion that the jealous Duchess had poisoned her.
