Composta tra il novembre 1835 e il marzo 1836, la Vita di Henry Brulard è il racconto autobiografico di un’infanzia e di un’adolescenza ardenti e chiuse in se stesse, in mezzo a un ambiente ostile, che termina bruscamente in un’aura di felicità e di liberazione con l’arrivo di Stendhal a Milano, nel giugno del 1800, al seguito dell’esercito napoleonico.

Il fut témoin de bonne heure de la méchanceté et de l'hypocrisie de certaines gens, de là sa haine d'instinct pour la gion.
