The two stepsisters are also unexpected. Iris, our narrator, is a truly good person, though she's told she's ugly almost constantly. Ruth is ox-like and mentally retarded. In the original Cinderella tale, the stepsisters were not necessarily ugly in feature but ugly in heart - in _Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister_, they're likable people.
