Critics reviews. A middle-aged former yakuza is released from prison after thirteen years where he was placed for murder. He is struggling to adapt to society and freedom, find a job and communicate normally, but he is also preoccupied by the quest for his mother from whom he was separated as a child.
TIFF20 Film #4: "Under the Open Sky" has a lot of great moments and scenes along with a fantastic lead performance from Yakusho Kōji but the overlong run time, slow pacing and lack of focus just kept me from getting as engaged with this as I wanted too. It's not a bad movie and it's shot gorgeously but it feels surprisingly familiar.
