28 mar 2024 · Bennie Moten (born November 13, 1894, Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.—died April 2, 1935, Kansas City) was an American pianist, one of the earliest known organizers of bands in the Midwest in the emergent years of jazz. Moten became a bandleader in and around his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, in 1922 and remained so until his death.

Sadly, Bennie Moten did not live to see his broader impact on jazz. Instead, he died at Wheatley-Provident Hospital during what should have been a routine surgery to remove his tonsils in 1935. Most of the musicians in the Bennie Moten Orchestra followed a talented pianist named William "Count" Basie, who himself had been a part of Moten's band.
