On May 28, 1968, at age 30, he died a prisoner in the Washington state penitentiary at Walla Walla—but in his short, and often violent life, he gave us songs that will outlive us all.
9 set 2018 · Little Willie John, born William Edward John on November 15th, 1937, was one of ten children born in Cullendale, Arkansas to Mertis John and mother Lillie John. His family migrated north to Detroit, Michigan in the 1940s so his father could find work. Little Willie John was a musically gifted child who performed in gospel groups and talents shows.
John was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. The Susan Whitall-Kevin John biography is aptly titled Fever: Little Willie John—A Fast Life, Mysterious Death and the Birth of Soul. Little Willie John was a teenager when he recorded his first hit, “All Around the World,” for King Records, in 1955. When his career faded in 1962, John was a grizzled veteran of 25. Although rock & roll was once the province of the young, few singers under the age of 20 have been able to communicate more than jittery restlessness or poignant ache.
