7 mag 2013 · Harold Nicolson met Winston Churchill in the spring of 1908, when Nicolson was an undergraduate at Oxford and dined periodically with his Balliol friend Arthur Bertie at Wytham Abbey, a few miles from the city. This “grim gray building in a lovely park” was the country estate of Arthur’s father the 7th Earl of Abingdon.

Harold George Nicolson was born in 1886 in Tehran and died in 1968 at Sissinghurst Castle. During his career as a diplomat and writer, Nicolson published over twenty books, six literary biographies, two novels, a study of biography, as well as books about diplomatic practice and his famous diaries.
Nicolson's thought, never remote or abstract, was given depth and seriousness by his life as a practitioner.
